A. PRODUCT OVERVIEW
CHKINST is a small utility that checks the integrity of the PAF installation
profile and corrects it if necessary.

This program is intended for PAF Pre 1 installations. When installing this
edition of PAF it can happen that the installation profile is not generated
correctly on some systems due to bugs in the OREXX interpreter of OS/2 that
cause some installation plugins to fail quietly. Since these errors are not
predictable, the CHKINST utility should be used to check the system after
installation and correct if appropriately if necessary.

Note, that this utility will become part of the distribution of future PAF
releases, thus you only need it for checking PAF Pre 1 installation profiles.

You can only use CHKINST to examine your PAF installation AFTER the PAF
product has been installed and the system has been restarted. CHKINST cannot
run immediately after PAF installation.

Every new PAF Pre 1 installation should be checked with the CHKINST utility.

B. INSTALLING AND USING THE CHKINST UTILITY
Since the CHKINST utility will become part of forthcoming PAF distributions
the current program release has not got an own installation tool. Simply copy
the chkinst.exe module into your \PAF\APPS directory.

Using the program is easy:

1. Open an OS/2 command window or full screen session.
2. Type in chkinst as command and press return.

CHKINST checks the PAF system and prints the following information on screen,
if no errors are found in the installation profile:

o the type of the PAF edition (pre or final)
o the edition number
o the number of days passed since PAF was installed
o validity information of the current PAF installation

CHKINST tries to reset the installation profile in case of errors. After such
operations are complete, the system must be restartet. After restarting the
system, PAF is reset to the current edition with the unregistered status.
CSD information is kept in any case, therefore you do not need to reinstall
fixpacks after the installation profile was reset.
