Explanation of names of zipped files for 1993 Issue 7 and later:

DSNymA = Developer Support News 199y issue m ASCII (plain-text)
DSNymI = Developer Support News 199y issue m .INF (use OS/2 VIEW)
DSNymP = Developer Support News 199y issue m .PS (PostScript)

where y = last digit of year (3, 4, ...)
      m = issue represented as alpha (1=A, ..., 7=G, 8=H, ...)

For example, DSN3GI is 1993 issue 7 (=G), the 15 October issue, in .INF
format (after being unzipped).

        | IBM LAN Server 4.0 Makes Networking Fast and Easy | ls40
        +---------------------------------------------------+

IBM's LAN Server 4.0 raises the bar for network operating systems, with
new features that provide unmatched usability, interoperability, and
scalability.

Easy-to-Use Entry and Advanced Versions
---------------------------------------

LAN Server 4.0 is available in Entry and Advanced versions. Both
versions have a new graphical user interface that includes drag-and-drop
administration and enables users to launch features with a click of the
mouse.

"Up and Running" Manual
-----------------------

A simple "Up and Running" manual answers the questions most commonly
asked during the first 90 days of use. These enhancements simplify the
process of running a network, so customers can spend their time running
their businesses.

Easy and Tailored Installation Options
--------------------------------------

The product provides two installation options. The Easy Option installs
the product in minutes, self-configuring to fit the LAN environment. For
more customized installations, the Tailored Option allows an experienced

Support for Popular Network Adapters
------------------------------------

LAN Server 4.0 supports most popular Ethernet and Token Ring adapters,
many of which are automatically identified and connected during
installation.

Support for Clients Running Many Platforms
------------------------------------------

LAN Server supports OS/2, DOS, Windows, Macintosh, Windows for
Workgroups, and Windows NT clients. DOS clients are provided with a
unique graphical user interface, and the new DOS Requester provides
significant improvements in performance and memory use, leaving more
than 600 KB available for applications. LAN Server 4.0 also supports
symmetric multiprocessing, now available in OS/2 2.11.

Small and Medium Networks
-------------------------

LAN Server 4.0 Entry is ideal for small- and medium-sized networks.
The simplified installation and drag-and-drop administration require
no special skills to set up the LAN. Hardware costs are reduced, since
LAN Server does not require any specific dedicated server hardware.
And, in addition to full server functionality, the peer services
capability included with LAN Server allows users to directly share
resources, such as printers, files, and CD-ROMs, among clients.

LAN Server networks can grow easily and economically as a business
grows. Customers can expand their networks by adding clients or
additional servers without paying a tiered-pricing penalty. Upgrading
from Entry to Advanced is as simple as installing the Advanced product.
Data and applications do not need to be reloaded. In the same way, both
Entry and Advanced are completely upgradable from previous versions.

Large Network Features
----------------------

For larger customers and enterprise networks, LAN Server 4.0 offers all
of its ease-of-use features as well as powerful macros, 32-bit APIs, and
a REXX programming interface that can be used to simplify repetitive and
complex tasks. New management features include cross-domain
administration, disk-user limits, and a set of problem-determination
applets.

LAN Server Advanced continues to provide industry-leading performance
and superior facilities for large and growing networks. In addition to
the features offered by the Entry version, Advanced includes fault
tolerance, Pentium optimization, and a high-performance file system for
improved security and enhanced performance.

Base for Distributed Computing

     | New Version of IBM'S OS/2 to Include BonusPak Applications |
     +------------------------------------------------------------+

IBM announces that the next version of its award-winning OS/2 will ship
with more than ten applications in a BonusPak distributed with the
operating system. The BonusPak includes a valuable suite of productivity
applications and communications utilities designed to maximize the
inherent 32-bit power of OS/2.

BonusPak Components
-------------------

Components of the BonusPak include:

o IBM Works -- This mini-suite of native 32-bit OS/2 applications
delivers word processing, database, spreadsheet charting, graphics,
and report-writing capabilities. The software collection provides
small and home business users with the necessary tools to get up and
run immediately. IBM Works offers simplicity for PC novices and power
  for expert users.

o CIM for OS/2 -- With this native OS/2 version of the popular
CompuServe Information Manager on-line service navigational tool,
users can easily access the latest news, review sports scores, check
weather forecasts, book travel itineraries, download games, catch up
on current Hollywood gossip, or participate in one of the many
electronic boards -- directly from their OS/2 desktop.

o FaxWorks for OS/2 -- With this application, users can fax documents
from within an application or from the desktop. Because the
application takes advantage of IBM's System Object Model (SOM), users
can drag documents to the fax icon and drop for easy faxing.

o Personal Information Manager -- Individuals looking to "get organized"
can rely on the Personal Information Manager to schedule meetings, set
important date reminders, and maintain an up-to-date address book. The
PIM application is also SOM-enabled, so users can, for example, drag
and drop an address or reminder directly into an IBM Works document.

o Person to Person for OS/2 -- IBM's real-time conferencing software
allows up to eight users to view and revise the same document
simultaneously. Without leaving their desks, users can still achieve
the same level of efficiency, personal interaction, and productivity
  associated with traditional working sessions.

o SYSINFO Tool -- IBM's usability enhancement utility assists users with
system and software problem resolution. SYSINFO Tool allows the user
to query system configuration, disk space, model number and processor
  type, and operating system levels.

o Hilgraeve HyperACCESS Lite for OS/2 -- This entry version of the very
popular, award-winning communications product from Hilgraeve adds a
Workplace Shell-exploitive user interface and the communications
capabilities users need to access online services and bulletin boards,
  or to transfer files.

Apps Integrated Using Object Capabilities
-----------------------------------------

These components provide OS/2 customers with a complete set of
competitive, entry-level applications that are integrated via the object
capabilities of the OS/2 Workplace Shell. Utilizing the Workplace
Shell's drag-and-drop functionality, users can copy or link information
from spreadsheets to word-processor documents, or embed names and
addresses from the Personal Information Manager into mail merge
documents simply by dragging the address from the PIM to a document
object.

Operating System and Apps in Same Box
-------------------------------------

"With the BonusPak applications, the basic needs of the user are met
from day one," said George McQuilken, president of Demeter
International, a Marblehead, Mass.-based consulting firm. "The
convenience of an operating system and exploitive productivity
applications provided in the same box is a huge selling point. I believe
IBM has a real winner here."

"Users love the performance and reliability of OS/2," said Wally Casey,
director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division.
"The BonusPak applications showcase the power of 32-bit multitasking and
ease of use of to a whole new group of users, and we expect them to fuel
demand for additional world-class OS/2 applications."

Support for Multiple Windows Products
-------------------------------------

The next version of OS/2 will allow Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows
for Workgroups 3.1, and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 applications to run
on the same desktop. The product is scheduled to ship in October.

            | Ride the Information Superhighway with Warp: | inetwarp
            | New OS/2 to Offer Internet Access |
            +----------------------------------------------+

IBM announces that the next version of OS/2, code-named Warp, will
include comprehensive Internet access capabilities as part of its
"Information Superhighway" offerings in the set of BonusPak
applications.

When Warp ships, it will be the first PC operating system to deliver
complete access to the Internet. Warp offers everything users need to
quickly and easily access the vast worldwide network that links more
than 20 million users.

State-of-the-Art Internet Access Tools
--------------------------------------

The next version of OS/2 will include TCP/IP communications software;
Internet access utilities, such as Gopher, FTP, and Telnet; and
advanced electronic mail capabilities. Warp provides easy one-button
access to the IBM Global Network, which is managed by Advantis, a
partnership formed by IBM and Sears, Roebuck and Company.

IBM also announced plans for an advanced, graphical web browser, called
WebExplorer, which will be made available to Warp users later this year.

Internet, the Number-One Hot Topic
----------------------------------

"We've received more than 20,000 questions -- from approximately 13,000
business executives -- during the first quarter of this year, and the
number-one 'hot' topic is the Internet," said Andrew Garvin, president
and co-founder of Find/SVP, a New York-based consulting and research
firm. "The most often-asked questions are what the Internet is, and how
to access it."

Total IBM Internet Solution
---------------------------

"Complex software configurations and the difficult search for
appropriate connection services have kept the Internet out of reach for
many users," said Wally Casey, director of marketing, IBM Personal
Software Products division. "Now, with Warp, we've simplified the
process and made it inexpensive, so that virtually anyone with a
computer can get on the 'Information Superhighway' using our on-ramp.
We've also created intuitive menu-driven tools, such as our OS/2
NewsReader and IBM 'Fun Page,' which references the 'best of the Net',
to help our users get the best value from the Internet experience."

"Warp is a great result of the new synergy we are achieving at IBM
through coordinated development efforts that integrate the robust
technologies of our various divisions and companies," noted Fernand
Sarrat, general manager, Networked Application Services division. "By
offering customers powerful tools like the WebExplorer, we are bringing
IBM's diverse technology portfolio together to enable users to keep pace
with the growing trend toward network-centric computing and to easily
join an increasingly interconnected world."

IBM Internet Connection
-----------------------

To surf the Internet, users simply click on the Internet folder, which
will initiate the one-time registration process and connect them with
the IBM Global Network via Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP). As an
incentive to start "surfing," Warp users will get ten free hours of
connect time as an introductory offer.

World Wide Web
-------------

Once users log on, they will be greeted with a menu page with icons
representing the "best of the Net," including the popular World Wide Web
(WWW), a vast electronic library of information. Users can visit the
Travel Center for vacation ideas, or go to the Sports Center for the
latest news about their favorite sports and teams.

In addition, users can access IBM information through IBM's worldwide
web servers. Users can turn to the IBM Corporate Home Page, where they
will be greeted with a message from Chairman and CEO Lou Gerstner and
given the key to a wealth of IBM-specific information. Information
about OS/2 and other IBM desktop software products will be located under
the Personal Software Products Home Page in the "Products and Services"
category.

Navigating with the WebExplorer
-------------------------------

Navigating the Internet is made easier with IBM's WebExplorer, a
graphical web browser. The WebExplorer beta will be made available to
Warp users via electronic download in the next several weeks. Instead of
using network addresses and commands, users can now move through the
Internet using a common graphical interface, which integrates the
functionality of services such as Gopher, Telnet, and FTP (File Transfer
Protocol). Power users who do not want to use the WebExplorer can have
direct access to these Internet access functions via individual icons.

Gopher will allow them to access different servers and view graphics and
text files, no matter where in the world they originate. By opening the
Telnet icon, users can log in from their own computers to any remote
location, and gain access to remote data libraries, including the
Library of Congress. With FTP, which is designed with the Presentation
Manager graphical interface, users can exchange files with remote
Internet servers and their own computers.

Human-Centered Communications
-----------------------------

Warp also features powerful electronic mail capabilities using IBM's
UltiMail product. "It's the perfect tool to communicate with anyone
around the world," said Casey. "With UltiMail, you are not limited by
text. You can send bit-mapped pictures and animated graphics. You can
send to and receive mail from anyone through the Internet, including
anyone on the major electronic mail services such as CompuServe, MCI
Mail, IBM Mail Exchange, PRODIGY, and America Online."

OS/2 NewsReader Highlights News of Interest
-------------------------------------------

The answer to life's simple and perplexing questions may be found
through the OS/2 NewsReader. By clicking on the NewsReader icon, users
can get an organized, alphabetical list of Internet news groups. "Much
like when individuals grab for the newspaper sections that interest them
most, the OS/2 NewsReader allows users to select only the news they want
to read and create their own personal newspaper that's delivered to
their desktop -- electronically -- every day," said James Neiser,
director of IBM networking products marketing.

Warp Beta Program Continues
---------------------------

The next version of OS/2 will allow OS/2, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11,
Windows for Workgroups 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and DOS
applications to run on the same desktop. The product is scheduled to be
announced in October.

Warp's worldwide Internet access capabilities are subject to
telecommunications regulations in each country, and are being tested in
a limited beta program.

        | IBM Celebrates Certification Programs' Success | progcert
        +------------------------------------------------+

IBM announces that more than 600 products and 1,000 software
professionals have been qualified through IBM's Personal Software
Products certification programs since they were announced a year ago.

"Ready! for IBM LAN" and "Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems"
------------------------------------------------------------------

The "Ready! for IBM LAN" and "Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems"
certified product list identifies products compatible in the IBM LAN
environment. The professional certification program identifies software
professionals who are proficient in servicing and supporting IBM OS/2
and LAN Server products.

"Customers who buy certified products can do so with the confidence that
the products are compatible in a designated LAN environment," said Phil
Powers, director of marketing, LAN Systems, Personal Software Products
division. "This can reduce decision time, as well as the costs
associated with buying hardware and software."

The "Ready! for IBM LAN" certification mark is earned by software
vendors through self-testing under IBM guidelines for product
compatibility with IBM LAN Server. The "Tested and Approved for IBM LAN
Systems" certification mark signifies that a product has been tested in
an IBM lab for compatibility, interoperability, and coexistence in a
real-world, heterogeneous LAN Systems environment.

IBM tests products in its Austin, Texas, Integration Test Lab, which is
configured with IBM and non-IBM hardware and software to reproduce a
typical customer environment.

"Buying pretested, certified products can give a business a networking
technology edge in today's competitive business environment," said
Powers. Lists of products bearing these marks are available at major
networking trade shows and through a variety of other public sources.

IBM Professional Certification Program
--------------------------------------

The IBM Professional Certification program has certified more than 1,000
software professionals since it began testing in May. More than 1,500
additional software professionals are well on their way to completing
their certification requirements.

Since testing began, more than 7,500 certification tests have been taken
in countries around the world by individuals interested in attaining the
IBM Professional Engineer, Professional Instructor, or Professional LAN
Administrator status. The certification designates professionals who are
proficient in servicing and supporting IBM personal software products.

          | IBM Technical Connection Personal Software | techconn
          +--------------------------------------------+

If you are an end user, developer, and/or help desk administrator who
needs immediate and comprehensive access to the latest in service and
product support information, IBM Technical Connection Personal Software
may be the right solution for you.

Think of the IBM Technical Connection Personal Software as a unique
reference library of OS/2, DOS, and LAN technical and service
information. Then consider the benefit of periodic CD-ROM updates,
giving you current information on demand.

IBM has consolidated the variety of media and sources of information
used by its service and support specialists, and delivered that
information on an easy-to-use media. Using the CD-ROM media, you can
find an answer quickly and easily because of the way the data is
structured.

The information is organized into seven databases: AskPSP; OS/2 APARs;
compressed corrective service diskettes; reference and diagnostic
diskettes; technical bulletins; device drivers; and product information.

The cornerstone of the Technical Connection is AskPSP, a case-based
expert system tool, used in identifying solutions to OS/2 and LAN
problems. AskPSP facilitates interactive exchange and dynamically
establishes potential solutions to your problem -- in essence, becoming
your "personal help desk" without your ever having to pick up the phone.

As a bonus, with the initial purchase of the IBM Technical Connection
Software, a copy of the CD-ROM containing the OS/2 Collection, over 275
books for a variety of OS/2 products, will also be shipped to you.

Seven Databases

             | IBM Outlines Plans for Advanced Software | sfwdeliv
             | Delivery and Distribution System |
             +------------------------------------------+

IBM announces plans to provide an electronic software shopping,
ordering, and delivery service to customers worldwide. Through
high-speed networking services provided by the IBM Global Network, the
advanced system will enable companies to electronically order and
automatically install software quickly and efficiently on PCs and
workstations at their locations around the world.

IBM's new system will significantly reduce the time it takes to select,
distribute, and install software on the desktop. Customers will have
immediate access to software libraries of popular business products,
and will also benefit from greatly reduced software packaging and
transportation costs.

Successful Sears Pilot
----------------------

Since March, the system has been in a pilot program at Sears, Roebuck
and Co., in partnership with Advantis, a network services provider. The
pilot successfully tested electronic prepackaging of software products;
on-demand electronic software delivery to network administrators; and
end-user selection of software for workstation installations at
scheduled times.

This advanced system of electronic software delivery, coupled with LAN
distribution using NetView Distribution Manager (NetView DM), IBM's
strategic software distribution solution, will end today's typical
"sneakernet", in which LAN administrators and their organizations
laboriously distribute software to users, loading diskettes one at a
time into desktop workstations while employees wait for their systems to
be upgraded.

Today, with IBM's NetView DM product family, the LAN administrator can
install, test, and restart thousands of workstations during off-peak
hours, for example, from a single-server workstation or minicomputer.
Users can begin work with new software up and running in less time than
ever before.

With IBM's new offering, the LAN administrator would have the additional
advantage of electronic shopping -- being able to browse catalogs, demo,
order, and receive new software products on a central server machine.

An Integrated, End-to-End Solution
----------------------------------

While the Sears pilot will continue, additional pilot programs are
planned with other companies this fall. All pilots will expand upon the
scope of the Sears pilot, and will include the following functions:
centralized database of popular products packaged for NetView DM
distribution; tailored catalogs to meet customer-specified product
lists; a graphical user interface that provides electronic shopping,
ordering, and receipt of software products, demos, and reference
materials; and interfaces to business systems that will automate
obtaining price quotes and checking order status.

This new offering will be available in 1995, following the completion of
the fall pilots. Plans are under way to work with existing software
channel participants to ready this offering for the marketplace.

IBM is also exploring other technology projects for delivering software,
including delivery through public online services such as PRODIGY, over
the Internet, and through advanced digital satellite technology.

              | Adobe Systems Agrees to Join CI Labs | ciladobe
              | and Announces OpenDoc Development Plans |
              +-----------------------------------------+

Component Integration Laboratories, Inc. (CI Labs), a vendor-neutral
industry association promoting the OpenDoc component software
technology, announces that Adobe Systems Incorporated has agreed to join
the non-profit organization as a full sponsor. Adobe has agreed to
provide financial support, and is announcing specific part development
plans.

Adobe Systems' sponsorship shows the momentum behind OpenDoc --
especially considering Lotus Development's joining CI Labs last month.
OpenDoc simplifies the process of creating, changing, viewing, and
sharing information of all kinds, on all popular platforms and across
heterogeneous networks.

"Leaders in the software industry are recognizing the need for a
non-proprietary, standards-based component software architecture,"
explained Andy Poupart, vice president of CI Labs. "OpenDoc is truly
open, and is platform-neutral. We welcome Adobe, and we are looking
forward to their participation."

"Adobe's vision is to make it easier for users to create, display, and
share graphically rich information, unbounded by the limitations of
today's applications and platforms," said John Warnock, chairman and
chief executive officer, Adobe Systems. "Component software offers a
means of delivering this vision. CI Labs is leading the industry to an
open standard for cross-platform component software, OpenDoc. We support
CI Labs because it provides a participatory forum to evolve component
software technologies in a non-proprietary manner.

"We think OpenDoc is a powerful way to achieve cross-platform component
software. Adobe will be developing companion OpenDoc parts for our major
video and graphics applications. These parts will allow basic display
and printing of documents in the content formats of Adobe Illustrator,
Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere software."

Mr. Poupart of CI Labs said "CI Labs believes that no one company can
deliver true, cross-platform, component software in a proprietary
manner. CI Labs helps the industry to innovate, and encourages
companies to compete based on added value, not on file formats and
artificial barriers. We encourage any company that wants to participate
in open development of object technology to join CI Labs."

Adobe Systems -- a Leader in Growth
-----------------------------------

Adobe Systems Incorporated develops, markets, and supports computer
software products and technologies that enable users to create, display,
print, and communicate electronic documents. The company licenses its
technology to major computer and publishing suppliers, and markets type
and application software products. Headquartered in Mountain View,
California, Adobe had fiscal 1993 revenues of over 313 million USD.

OpenDoc Makes Software Work Together
------------------------------------

A revolutionary transition in the software industry, OpenDoc component
software offers increased functionality and flexibility to users and
developers, while protecting current investments in software. The
OpenDoc promise includes easier manipulation of data and tools for
end-users, customizable applications in heterogeneous environments for
information systems managers, and greater differentiation and
competition for software developers.

Users will be able to view and edit text, graphics and multimedia
content within documents, without having to invoke separate
applications. Developers will focus on their areas of expertise and
begin converting code for existing application modules into OpenDoc
components, delivering more integrated products with quicker time to
market. Organizations will benefit in strategic ways: re-engineering
business processes, mining their companies' information assets, managing
work flow, and helping teams be more productive.

CI Labs is Open and Vendor-Neutral
----------------------------------

CI Labs is a vendor-neutral industry association promoting software
integration and component software. CI Labs' OpenDoc component software
architecture provides software integration that enables distributed,

Object-Oriented University is a major new education and training
initiative for IBM developers, analysts, designers, and consultants, as
well as customers.

OO: Key Element in Shorter Development Cycles
---------------------------------------------

With the potential for faster software creation, better program quality,
enhanced reliability, reuse, and transportability across platforms,
object-oriented technology is a key element in IBM's ability to provide
customers with business solutions in dramatically shorter cycles. Object
technology also will help IBM's customers take advantage of the
fast-moving opportunities in the markets of today and tomorrow.

Four Components
---------------

An international program with comprehensive offerings in object-oriented
concepts, programming, analysis, and design, the university consists of
residency, extension, continuing education, and special-events programs.

Residency Program
-----------------

The cornerstone of Object-Oriented University (OOU) is the residency
program, an intensive mix of classroom training, case studies, lab
exercises, mentoring programs, and on-the-job training. Selection of
campus sites in the USA, Asia/Pacific, and Europe for the residency
program is under way.

The residency program includes the following programs:

               | Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) | oviewdce
               +-----------------------------------------+

IBM is committed to helping customers solve the problem of distributed
computing by facilitating connectivity across IBM and other vendors'
platforms. As a key enabler of heterogeneous client/server computing,
the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) is an important part of
IBM's Open Blueprint, which provides a standards-based architecture for
the incorporation of technologies into a distributed network
environment.

Licensed from the Open Software Foundation (OSF), DCE is a set of open
programming interfaces that enable development and runtime environments
for distributed systems. In essence, DCE makes it easier for users
anywhere to locate, access, and use information.

IBM has established a leadership position by delivering DCE products on
multiple platforms. DCE is supported on AIX RS/6000, AIX/ESA, OS/400,
MVS/ESA, OS/2, and Windows. VM/ESA has announced a statement of
direction to support DCE.

This fact sheet includes a brief summary of DCE and its componentry, the
current plans for the rollout of DCE across IBM's operating systems, and
a summary of the broad industry support for DCE.

What is DCE?
------------

DCE is a set of integrated technologies, selected by the OSF, that
provides an open environment in which systems and equipment from
different vendors can work together, and geographically diverse
businesses can be linked easily and intuitively. OSF is a consortium of
vendors, including IBM, established to create and encourage a
multivendor environment with the intention of addressing
interoperability issues and creating an industry-wide set of standards.

DCE provides an integrated set of services to address the problems found
in distributed-computing application development. These include:

o Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - RPC extends the concept of a local
procedure call into the distributed environment, allowing programmers
to distribute application execution as if it were a local procedure.
It allows simultaneous execution between client and server, so that
the presentation processes of an application can be run on the client,
and the processing of data on the server.

o Directory Service - The Directory Service is a central repository of
information providing a single naming model throughout the
environment. It allows users to identify, by name, resources such as
users, servers, or RPC-based services, and gain access to them without
needing to know where they are located in a network.

o Time Service - This service regulates system clocks within the network
  to assure synchronization.

o Threads Service - Threads service supports the creation, management,
and synchronization of multiple threads of control within a single
process, allowing environments to perform applications simultaneously.
One thread can execute a remote procedure call at the same time that
  another is processing user input.

o Security Service - The Security Service provides secure communications
and controlled access to resources in the distributed system. It
provides an independent system that authenticates the identity of
users and authorizes access within a multiple host and operating
system environment. DCE Security Service is based on the Kerberos
  model.

o Distributed File Service (DFS) - This service creates and presents the
image of a single file across the distributed network. A single global
namespace means files stored on servers anywhere on the network can be
accessed using the same name. They can also be backed up and moved.

IBM and DCE
-----------

IBM's leadership in open standards-based computing is demonstrated by
the Open Blueprint, which offers customers and independent software
partners a guideline about IBM development direction. A key element of
the Open Blueprint is DCE.

As a facilitator of true open distributed systems, DCE supports customer
requirements for interoperability across multiple vendors' platforms.
Global directory capabilities and the security services that enable
single logon can be shared by all distributed computing resources.

IBM has DCE implementations on MVS/ESA, OS/400, OS/2, and AIX,
illustrating DCE's network and operating system independence across
platforms. DCE implementation on VM is also planned.

In January 1993, IBM became the first vendor with a commercially viable
DCE product when it announced the AIX Distributed Computing Environment
Family. IBM also was the first vendor to bring the Distributed File
Server (DFS) to market with its second release of AIX DCE in July 1993.

In September 1993, IBM delivered the first DCE product for the
PC-compatible marketplace with the introduction of the DCE Runtime
Client for OS/2, which provides the runtime services to interoperate
with other DCE-compliant implementations. Also in September, IBM made
available a DCE software developer toolkit for OS/2 and Windows
environments. In October, IBM was the first vendor to offer DCE Global
Directory Services, with the announcement of client and server products
for the RISC/6000 platform.

Late 1993 and early 1994 saw the announcement of plans for DCE on the
OS/400, MVS, and VM platforms. A limited availability of DCE has been
announced on the OS/400 platform, including RPC, and client support for
directory, security and time services, enabling AS/400-based
client/server applications in a DCE environment. An announcement on
general availability is planned for later in 1994.

Now in beta program, DCE on MVS is part of MVS OpenEdition, which
enables the mainframe to become an enterprise server in a DCE cell. The
value of DCE on MVS is in the exploitation of the technology through
IBM's resource managers. Future plans include DCE integration with IBM
resource managers, including CICS, IMS, APPN, MQS, and RACF.

As further evidence of its commitment to DCE and the delivery of open,
client/server computing, IBM recently announced (on 8 August 1994) its
intention to buy Transarc Corporation. Transarc is responsible for
developing AFS, a large-scale network file system whose technology
significantly influenced DCE. The company now develops the DCE
Distributed File System (DFS), and offers DCE in its Encina family of
Online Transaction Processing products.

Industry Support
----------------

DCE has been widely accepted as the standard infrastructure for
facilitating open, distributed computing by a growing number of
companies.

Platform coverage on DCE -- in addition to IBM's offering on AIX and
OS/2 -- includes support from every major UNIX vendor: Groupe Bull,
Digital, Hewlett Packard, Siemens Nixdorf, and SUN Microsystems.

The support of Independent Software Vendors is key to the continued
growth of DCE in the marketplace, and a number of ISVs have committed to
the use of DCE technology. IBM is working with ISVs as they roll out
their DCE tools and applications. Some of these ISVs include:

The Developer Connection for OS/2
---------------------------------

Volume 4 is now available for 75 CDN for a single issue. A four-issue
subscription (covering one year) costs 225 CDN.

The Developer Connection for OS/2 is a program that delivers the most
current information, tools, and pre-release code available from IBM and
Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to developers in support of their
continuing application development on the OS/2 platform.

The cornerstone of The Developer Connection for OS/2 is two CD-ROMs plus
The Developer Connection News. The CD-ROMs and newspaper are updated and
released four times per year.

The Developer Connection CD-ROMs contain pre-release programs that are
licensed for 120 days or until the next Developer Connection CD-ROM is
available, whichever comes first. Canadian DAP members will be notified
of the next release via the regular mailing, and there are postings on
CompuServe.

To use the CD-ROM, you must have a CD-ROM drive attached to your
computer system, with the necessary drivers that work under OS/2 2.x.
The Developer Connection News lists the OS/2-supported CD-ROM drives;
additional device drivers are available from third-party vendors.

The Developer Connection also operates a forum on CompuServe that
provides fast, responsive answers to your questions and problems.

To order The Developer Connection for OS/2 in Canada, call
1-800-561-5293.

Certification Programs
----------------------

Canadian DAP members can certify their applications as compatible with
OS/2 or LAN Server. The process entails self-certification. For each
product that you want to certify, the certification package sells for 30
CDN plus applicable taxes. After receiving the package, you do the
self-certification test, and then send it to IBM for verification, along
with a not-for-sale copy of the product you are certifying.

To start the process of certifying your applications, call
1-800-992-4777 and request the appropriate package:

As the computer industry shifts to new forms of development to meet the
demands of client/server computing, the abilities of the software
developer also need to evolve and expand. Fully exploiting the power and
potential of the latest advanced operating systems, together with
related products and technologies, places heavy demands on developers.

For software developers using IBM's OS/2 and OS/2-based products, the
IBM Developer Assistance Program in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA
DAP) meets these demands, and provides much more besides.

The EMEA DAP is open to any developer in EMEA who is actively developing
for OS/2, be it a device driver, a commercial product, a
line-of-business application, or a set of SOM objects.

Join the EMEA DAP and move into the fast lane of OS/2 development!

Bulletin-Board Service and CD-ROMs
----------------------------------

As a DAP member, you can access our dedicated EMEA DAP Bulletin Board
Service (BBS) and benefit from the wealth of tools, information, and
advice that we make available.

The BBS is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It enables
fellow OS/2 developers around the world to exchange ideas and
information, getting rapid responses from the experts. Support is
provided by our own OS/2 Certified Engineers, developers in the IBM
programming labs, and even other DAP members.

Our electronic repositories provide a comprehensive collection of many
IBM-developed OS/2 tools, documentation, fixes, sample code, electronic
newsletters, news items, and marketing material to support your
development efforts. We periodically mail out the latest offers to EMEA
DAP members, as well as DAP Library CD-ROMs, which conveniently package
together much of the information available on the bulletin board, making
this information readily accessible.

In order to make the BBS connection affordable for the developer, we
have installed local systems in many countries throughout EMEA, which
shadow the central BBS machine in Basingstoke UK. Members of the DAP in
those countries now no longer need to make an international telephone
call to connect to the DAP BBS. Local access to the DAP BBS will be
provided in more countries in the near future.

And what's more, it is all currently free of charge!

Discounts
---------

Selected promotions and discounts may be available when purchasing IBM
PC hardware, OS/2 software, and OS/2-related publications. These
discount programs vary by country, and your local IBM DAP contact will
be pleased to tell you if such a program is available in your country.

Technical Seminars
------------------

Technical seminars are held several times per year in different
countries, and the DAP program provides early information to members
about the dates and venues. These seminars are an excellent way to learn
about the latest developments in OS/2, and talk directly with the IBM
developers themselves.

HelpFax
-------

IBM HelpFax is an automated document-delivery system available on demand
from your telephone, 24 hours a day. HelpFax offers a wide variety of
information about IBM products and services, including "What's New",
"Operating Systems", "Networking", "Database and Client/Server", through
to "Marketing Brochures and Announcements". Your chosen documents will
be sent directly to your specified fax machine.

Application Marketing
---------------------

IBM support does not end once you have developed your product ... We
have a variety of marketing programs to help you market your OS/2
product to the OS/2 community around the world. Most are free, but
others are available at a nominal charge to help cover costs. Details
about the current programs will be posted on the BBS or mailed out.

CompuServe Support
------------------

The IBM Worldwide Developer Assistance Program provides a complimentary
service which is open to individuals without company or product
prerequisites. Worldwide DAP services include a variety of technical,
business, and marketing support services, provided through CompuServe.
Enrollment is done electronically through either the CompuServe
information service or by requesting an enrollment form from Internet.

Programming Tools and Information
---------------------------------

The EMEA DAP, through the BBS and DAP Library CD-ROMs, provides
developers with the latest OS/2 programming tools and information that
are generally (freely) available. An essential complement to our
services is The Developer Connection for OS/2, which provides additional
professional tools, utilities, product demos, information, and sample
code from IBM and others.

For a low-cost subscription to The Developer Connection for OS/2, you
will receive four quarterly updates in the form of a CD-ROM and a
newsletter. Support is provided through The Developer Connection for
OS/2 forum on CompuServe, as well as the CF.DEVCON customer forum on the

                    | AS/400 Partners in Development | part400
                    +--------------------------------+

Partners in Development builds on the ASsociation/400 business partner
support program. Through Partners in Development, IBM will provide
extensive technical support from the AS/400 Software Partner Lab in
Rochester, Minnesota, and at application support centers around the
world.

Because ASsociation/400 is the primary communication vehicle for the new
Partners in Development organization, the entry membership fee for
ASsociation/400 for 1994 has been reduced to 250 USD per year.

Technical support will include hands-on courses on product strategies,
early development for unannounced products, and post-announce product
issues. It will include courses for developers seeking to exploit
emerging technologies, including:

o Client/server implementation
o Object-oriented programming
o Multimedia
o Imaging
o Fax and mobile network access
o Integrated Language Environment (ILE) assistance
o OS/400 assistance

Customized courses also will be offered at vendor sites. In addition,
Partners in Development has a toll-free phone number, 1-800-365-4426,
extension 400, through which independent software vendors can get
immediate help finding the appropriate person to assist with any AS/400
matter.

Partners in Development also will assist in vendors' marketing and
delivery programs. For example, vendors will be able to work with the
Rochester lab's fulfillment center on their system configuration
proposals for customers, and to get their offerings included in IBM
configuration proposals. In addition, they will be able to have their
offerings pre-loaded in systems shipped directly from IBM. Assistance is
also available to business partners using the IBM AS/400 Portable One, a
full-function, portable model.

AS/400 Partners in Development also includes electronic access to IBM
developers through ASsociation/400 On-Line. The interactive service
provides all schedules, new offerings, and changes via a regular
newsletter and special mailings. It also includes developers' forums,
question-and-answer access to IBM technical support staff, bulletin
boards, and computer industry trade articles.

On-line support also will be available to vendors seeking to enhance
their marketing efforts with IBM's new Portable Sales Automation System
(PSAS). PSAS is a portable configurator and a suite of automated selling
tools with leading-edge graphics that runs on PC laptop or notebook
computers.

Membership in ASsociation/400 continues to provide its members with
benefits including developer support and two free software licenses per
year for IBM software development tools and products such as ImagePlus
and Ultimedia. ASsociation/400 members also receive education discounts
and developer leases.
