         +--------------------------------------------------+

With this issue, IBM SDO Developer Support News embarks on its third
year of bringing news of interest to solution developers worldwide.

DSNEWS recently became part of IBM's Solution Developer Operations unit.
One of SDO's missions is to help developers on all major platforms.
DSNEWS will therefore cover not only developing for OS/2 Warp and LAN
Systems, but also for OS/2 for the PowerPC platform, AIX for
workstations, the midrange AS/400 system, and MVS for mainframes.

In addition, DSNEWS is now available on the Internet World Wide Web in
the IBM Solution Developer Operations home page at
http://www.austin.ibm.com/developer/ .

We appreciate your many positive comments about DSNEWS during the past
two years, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

             | North American Developer Assistance Program | nadap
             +---------------------------------------------+

IBM's Solution Developer Operations organization announces the creation
of the North American Developer Assistance Program. This new program
provides cohesive support, marketing programs, and software and
hardware discounts to Independent Software Vendors located in the United
States and Canada. The goal of this program is to provide the best
solution developer support in the industry.

There are two levels of the North American DAP: Commercial Services and
Premier Services.

Commercial Services
-------------------

Commercial Services are available to ISVs who are developing or
marketing IBM Personal Software-based products for commercial release.
In support of their product development, Commercial Services members
receive:

o Online technical support at no charge
o Defect support for all warranted products that are supported by IBM
     support centers
o Complimentary access to the online database of Personal
     Software-based development tools
o Complimentary subscription to OS/2 Developer magazine
o Discounts on IBM Personal Software products
o IBM OS/2 & LAN Systems Application Directory
o IBM OS/2 & LAN Systems Development Tools Guide
o Sources & Solutions catalog
o "Ready! for OS/2" Compatibility Mark
o "Ready! for LAN Systems" Compatibility Mark
o IBM Direct Marketing Center

Premier Services
----------------

Premier Services are available to software developers who are marketing
or have committed to develop software products that provide native,
32-bit API support for OS/2, LAN Systems products, or OS/2 for PowerPC.
Developers of products that exploit object technologies like SOM and
OpenDoc are also eligible.

In addition to receiving the Commercial Services described previously,
Premier Services members have voice access to an advocate in IBM who can
assist them with the development and marketing opportunities that are
offered exclusively to Premier Services members.

             | OS/2 Warp Wave to Show Compatibility | wavecomp
             | in Product Compatibility Program |
             +--------------------------------------+

IBM announces that it is consolidating its compatibility program under a
single OS/2 Warp umbrella.

The OS/2 Warp Wave
------------------

The new compatibility marks, which IBM will license to ISVs and IHVs for
use on product packaging, flyers advertising, etc., incorporate the OS/2
Warp Wave. The marks will be used consistently worldwide to show product
compatibility with OS/2 Warp and the IBM OS/2 Warp LAN environment.

IBM Product Compatibility Program
---------------------------------

In addition to the new look, the company's product certification program
has been given a new name, IBM Product Compatibility Program, to make it
more consistent with industry practices.

These changes were made in response to the growing customer and ISV
interest in OS/2 Warp and IBM LAN Server.

Compatibility Self-Test
-----------------------

The "Ready for OS/2 Warp" and "Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server"
compatibility marks tell the consumer that the software developer has
used a set of IBM guidelines to self-test the product for compatibility
with a particular version of OS/2 Warp or IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp.

Compatibility-Tested by IBM
---------------------------

The "Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems" compatibility mark
tells the consumer that the software or hardware developer has
contracted with IBM to test the product's compatibility,
interoperability, and coexistence with a variety of IBM and non-IBM
products in a customer-like LAN Systems environment.

Marketing Visibility
--------------------

IBM provides marketing visibility for compatible products through
product listings and/or test reports at IBM trade show booths and
through a variety of other electronic and hardcopy mediums. IBM will
continue to list products that have been certified under the outgoing
program through the end of the licensing agreement.

The following are 65 questions and answers about the enhanced IBM
Product Compatibility Program with OS/2 Warp.

This information includes a description of the enhancements and
transition information for vendors who already have tested under Ready!
for OS/2, Ready! for IBM LAN, and Tested and Approved for IBM LAN
Systems.

This information applies to the USA and Canada only. For information and
availability of the IBM Product Compatibility program elsewhere, contact
your local IBM representative.

Q1: Why is IBM modifying its test program by changing the current marks
    to OS/2 Warp marks?

A1: Changing the marks and the test orientation to recognize the growth
and acceptance of OS/2 is a natural evolution for the program. The
change in the marks will assist customers in determining the
viability of products working with OS/2.

Q2: Doesn't IBM already have several programs offering marks for
hardware and software that state they run with OS/2 and pass IBM
    tests?

A2. Yes. One of the reasons for announcing this program is to
consolidate the marks offered by these programs under IBM's flagship
OS/2 Warp product. Our customers felt that the different marks were
confusing. The new mark is consistent worldwide for all OS/2
Warp-related programs, making compatible products and programs
easier for our customers to recognize.

Q3: Will the testing in this program be any different from the Ready!
for OS/2, Ready! for IBM LAN, and Tested and Approved for IBM LAN
    Systems programs already in existence?

A3: The processes will remain the same, but OS/2 Warp will now be
    included in the testing.

Q4: Why is this a "compatibility" program and not a "certification"
    program?

A4: The change more clearly reflects the intent and benefits of the
program, as well as industry practices.

Q5: What is the difference between the testing conducted by National
Software Testing Laboratory (NSTL) for OS/2 Warp applications and
the testing offered by IBM's Product Compatibility Program?

A5: NSTL is an independent test lab that conducts fee-based
compatibility tests with IBM's OS/2 Warp. The mark that is issued
by NSTL is an NSTL mark that states the application runs on OS/2
    Warp.

Q6: If a product has been tested by NSTL for OS/2 Warp compatibility,
can it also receive a Ready for OS/2 Warp compatibility mark?

A6: Yes. To obtain a Ready for OS/2 Warp compatibility mark, an IBM
License Agreement would have to be signed.

Q7: Will products already certified as Ready! for OS/2 have to be
retested for the new Ready for OS/2 Warp?

A7: Yes. All developers who had products certified under Ready! for OS/2
will automatically be sent a revised set of test suites for OS/2
Warp. There are some additional operations that will need to be
performed for OS/2 Warp compatibility. They will also be sent a
revised license agreement to sign for use of the Ready for OS/2 Warp
    mark.

Q8: Will products already certified as Ready! for IBM LAN have to be
retested for the new Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server mark?

A8: Yes. All developers who had products certified for Ready! for IBM
LAN will automatically be sent a revised test guideline book and
license agreement. This book is written for IBM OS/2 LAN Server 4.0
and OS/2 Warp. If the product was tested using LAN Server 3.0, the
book needs to be reviewed for additional operations that need to be
performed. The revised license agreement must be signed in order to
use the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server mark.

Q9: Will products already certified as Tested and Approved for IBM LAN
Systems have to be retested to use the new Tested and Approved for
    OS/2 Warp LAN Systems mark?

A9: Yes. The previous testing IBM conducted did not include OS/2 Warp.
Therefore, to display the new mark, a product must be retested.

Q10: Why should a product be retested to use the new mark?

A10: A product that has been tested does not have to be retested unless
the developer wants to take advantage of the new mark. The OS/2
Warp mark has worldwide recognition. Therefore, displaying this
mark should have an even more positive impact on product sales.
Also, since more customers are moving to OS/2 Warp, it could give
     the product broader appeal.

Q11: Must a developer pay to have his or her product retested in the
     laboratory?

A11: Yes. To maintain testing integrity, the product must be put back
through the entire test cycle. It is recommended, however, that
the customer continue to use the present mark until a new version
of his or her product is developed and ready for testing.

Q12: If a developer is about to release a new version of a product that
has already been Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems, will it
have to be retested to use the new mark? If so, will the cost be
     the same?

A12: Yes and yes. No matter how small the modifications are to each
product, they could affect any and all parts of the environment
with which it is designed to run. Therefore, it is important that
the product go through a complete retest.

Q13: If products were certified under one of the current programs, how
long may they display the old mark(s)?

A13: The mark(s) may be used for the length of time designated in the
     licensing agreement.

Q14: If a product is written for a pre-Warp version of OS/2, can it get
tested under the previous programs and use the old marks?

A14: This option is available only for IBM LAN Systems testing. There
     may be an additional cost.

Q15: IBM offered a reduced-cost version of IBM OS/2 LAN Server to ISVs
who wanted to self-test their product for Ready! for IBM LAN
compatibility. Will IBM offer a reduced-cost version of OS/2 Warp
to ISVs, since it is now required for compatibility testing?

A15: Yes. OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS2 (the OS/2 Warp Fullpack), as well as
IBM OS/2 LAN Server 4.0, will be offered at a discount for the
     purpose of compatibility testing.

Q16: If the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server mark does not reflect a
specific version of LAN Server, how will a customer know which
version of LAN Server is compatible with a product?

A16: The new Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server mark is being used with LAN
Server 4.0 and any subsequent versions. For information about
specific versions, contact the owner of the tested product.

Q17: What does the new OS/2 Warp compatibility mark really mean to a
     customer?

A17: It means that compatibility testing has been done over and above
the normal testing conducted during the development cycle. This
testing gives the customer more confidence that a product can work
     in his or her environment.

Q18: If a software product is designed to run in a LAN client/server
environment, isn't the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server program too
     simplified?

A18: It depends. The key is the size and scope of the client/server
environment. If the product will primarily reside in an
environment containing multiple applications running on different
types of systems, it would make sense to have the more in-depth
compatibility testing that Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
Systems provides. If not, consider the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN
     Server option.

Q19: What does IBM mean by Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
     Systems?

A19: It means that a product bearing this mark has been successfully
tested by IBM in a customer-like OS/2 Warp environment to determine
its compatibility and its ability to coexist and interoperate with
IBM LAN products and some of the most common software packages and
     hardware offered today.

Q20: How does IBM's Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems
program compare with Novell's "Yes NetWare Tested and Approved"
     program?

A20: The programs are similar in objectives and cost.

Q21: What is the difference between the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server
program and the Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems
     program?

A21: The Ready program is a free option that determines compatibility of
a software package running on IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp. The
developer obtains a self-test kit from IBM, tests the product, and
sends the results to IBM. Upon successful review, the product is
awarded the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server mark.

Tested and Approved is a fee-based option that determines the
compatibility and interoperability of either a hardware or software
product with IBM and non-IBM LAN programs running in an OS/2 Warp
multi-application, multi-system environment. Testing is done at
IBM's integration test lab in Austin, Texas. Upon successful
completion, the product is awarded the use of the Tested and
Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems compatibility mark.

Q22: The Ready! for OS/2 and Ready! for IBM LAN options have been free
to vendors. Is there a charge for the Ready for OS/2 Warp and Ready
for OS/2 Warp for LAN Server parts of the IBM Product Compatibility
     Program?

A22: There are currently no charges for self-test. However,if a vendor
does not have a copy of OS/2 Warp or IBM LAN Server, the vendor can
purchase these products at a discount for compatibility testing
     only.

Q23: DOS and/or Windows applications could be certified under the
previous program. Can these applications be tested with OS/2 Warp
and carry the new compatibility mark?

A23: Yes. One of the advantages of OS/2 Warp is that it runs DOS and
Windows applications. Therefore, existing applications can be
declared compatible upon completion of the IBM self-test
guidelines. IBM recommends, however, that ISVs seriously consider
the advantages of writing or converting their applications to the
     OS/2 32-bit operating system.

Q24: Will IBM continue to publish lists and reports of products tested
     under the previous programs?

A24: Yes. IBM will continue to publish lists of compatible products
under the previous marks until June 1996. Depending on the due
dates of the published sources, some of the listings may be
discontinued during the second quarter of 1996. To assure continued
listing, it is recommended that developers get their new or updated
versions tested with OS/2 Warp as quickly as possible.

Q25: What kind of guarantee is there when the testing is complete?

A25: There is no guarantee (implied or otherwise) with the testing
performed by IBM or the self-tests performed by developers and
reviewed by IBM. However, the test center can provide support after
the testing has completed to the level defined in the original
     contract.

Q26: How does a person get more information about the Ready testing
     options?

A26: In the USA and Canada, call 1-800-992-4777 and ask for information
about Ready for OS/2 Warp or Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server.
Customers in other countries should contact their local IBM
     representative.

Q27: How does someone get more information about the Tested and Approved
for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems testing?

A27: In the USA and Canada, call 1-800-992-4777 or fax 1-512-838-2473
and ask for information about Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
Systems. Customers in other countries can fax a request for an
     application to 1-512-838-2473.

Q28: What benefits are there for ISVs or IHVs to have their products
     compatibility-tested?

A28: Many of our customers have asked us to do more to assist them in
determining that IBM and non-IBM products function well together.
Some of the customers have even stated that if a product does not
display some proof of compatibility testing, that product can't be
used in a bid for their business. This type of testing goes a long
way in giving the customer confidence in selecting products.

Besides customer confidence, lists of compatible products and/or
Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems reports are
distributed through a number of media sources including:
CompuServe, Internet, Reseller News (MAX), Ziff Davis Interactive
Support on Site for Networks, IBM-4FAX, and Canada's Help FAX.
Also, discount advertising is available in major trade journals.
All these benefits are meant to increase the awareness for the
compatibility attributes of the product in the eyes of potential
     buyers.

Q29: How long does Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems testing
     take?

A29: It depends upon the type and complexity of the product. A software
package can take from one to two weeks; a server, two weeks; a
workstation, one to two weeks; and an adapter card, one week.

Q30: What are the fees for the Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
     Systems testing?

A30: Fees vary depending upon the product being tested. A software
package that may take two weeks to test costs 6995 USD; a server
that may also take two weeks, 7995 USD; a client, 5995 USD; and an
adapter card, which normally takes less than a week, 3295 USD.

Q31: Why is IBM charging for the Tested and Approved testing?

A31: The investment required to assure product compatibility in a
complex environment is large. Testing involves a number of systems
and software packages and is time-consuming. Therefore it is
     necessary to recover costs.

Q32: Can a vendor, who might have hardware and software equivalent to
that used in Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems testing,
do his or her own testing?

A32: Not at this time. It is something we are looking at.

Q33: Can a developer receive a discount for testing multiple products?

A33: That depends on whether the products can be tested at the same
time. For example, multiple adapters can usually be tested at the
same time if they use the same device driver.

Q34: If a product earns the Tested and Approved for OS/2 LAN Systems
mark, does it also receive the Ready for OS/2 Warp and Ready for
     OS/2 Warp LAN Server marks?

A34: Since Tested and Approved testing includes the equivalent testing
involved in the Ready options, it is possible to obtain the Ready
marks. However, this is not automatic. They have to be requested
     from 1-800-992-4777.

Q35: How does an ISV or an IHV engage the IBM integration test lab, and
what is the process for obtaining the Tested and Approved for OS/2
     Warp LAN Systems mark?

A35: The vendor can call 1-800-992-4777 and ask for information about
Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems, or can fax a request
for an application to 1-512-838-2473. The returned application
generates a contract and invoice. When the contract and payment are
received, the product is scheduled for testing. The customer ships
the product, appropriate documentation, and applicable test cases.
Upon test completion, a report is written and reviewed with the
customer. If the product passes, the report will be made available
to the public, and authority to use the mark will be sent to the
customer. If the product fails, the report is not distributed.

Q36: What is the process that an ISV goes through to obtain the Ready
for OS/2 Warp and Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server marks?

A36: Once the developer receives the appropriate testing guidelines from
IBM, he or she completes the testing and signs the license
agreement for the use of the mark. Within three to five days after
receipt of the signed license agreement and test results, IBM will
mail the camera-ready artwork for the compatibility mark.

Q37: When in the vendor's product development cycle does the IBM
integration test lab conduct its tests?

A37: Since the mark represents compatibility with available products, it
is important that off-the-shelf products be used for testing.

Q38: When in the vendor's product development cycle can a product
     participate in Ready compatibility self-testing?

A38: As soon as the developer is comfortable that the product can be
tested for full compatibility with OS/2 Warp or IBM LAN Server with
     OS/2 Warp.

Q39: Since Tested and Approved costs money and Ready is free, why should
I want to spend money for Tested and Approved?

A39: Each facet of the compatibility program has a purpose. The Ready
option is a quick, efficient way to get recognition and market
awareness for your software product. The Ready marks also represent
compatibility testing with a single software package, either OS/2
Warp or IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp. The in-depth Tested and
Approved testing option conducted by IBM is for products that are
typically in complex, heterogeneous environments. The Tested and
Approved mark represents compatibility and interoperability with
many IBM and non-IBM LAN system products.

Q40: When a developer certified a product through Ready! for OS/2, he or
she had the option of signing a document stating that the product
was installed and running successfully at a customer location.
Will the developer be able to do this again to obtain the Ready for
     OS/2 Warp mark?

A40: Yes, this alternate testing option is still available.

Q41: When a developer certified a product through Ready! for IBM LAN, he
or she had the option of signing a document stating that the
product was installed and running successfully at a customer
location. Will the developer be able to do this again to obtain the
Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server mark?

A41: Yes, this alternate testing option is still available.

Q42: Does IBM have a lab where a developer can self-test his or her
product for Ready for OS/2 Warp or Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server?

A42: IBM does not have facilities that will test for free. The IBM
integration test lab will do the self-tests for a fee.

Q43: Does IBM have a Ready for OS/2 Warp and Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN
     Server program for hardware?

A43: There is Ready for OS/2 Warp hardware compatibility testing. This
is an option of the IBM Product Compatibility Program. Currently
there is not a Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server hardware test option.
For more information, call 1-800-426-4579 from the USA or Canada,
or 1-708-296-6767 from elsewhere, or fax 1-708-635-3620.

Q44: If a product has different language versions (e.g. French, German),
does each version have to be tested to use the compatibility mark?

A44: Yes, because each language means a change to the program, which
     could cause different compatibility problems.

Q45: Is information about the IBM Compatibility Program available
     outside the USA and Canada?

A45: The program is available on a country-by-country basis. Contact an
IBM representative in the respective country for compatibility
     program information.

Q46: Is the IBM Compatibility Program implemented worldwide?

A46: Ready for OS/2 Warp and Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server will be
available in those countries that implement the program. Tested and
Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems is worldwide for
English-language products, but testing is currently available only
     in Austin, Texas.

Q47: What hardware is used in the Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
     Systems compatibility testing?

A47: The IBM Austin integration test lab has access to approximately 300
PCs interconnected with token ring and Ethernet LANs. Presently,
about 70 percent of the personal computers are non-IBM. Compaq,
Dell, NCR, AST, Gateway, ACER, NEC, and Packard Bell are
representative of the non-IBM personal computers used in the lab.

The test lab also has network printers, bridges, and an intelligent
     hub for managing the networks.

Q48: Why are so many non-IBM personal computers used in Tested and
     Approved compatibility testing?

A48: IBM recognizes that many customers use a mix of IBM and non-IBM
hardware. To provide better test coverage of customers'
environments and product interaction, the test center uses
     different vendor hardware.

Q49: What software is used in Tested and Approved testing?

A49: There is a wide variety of IBM and non-IBM products used during
the test process. Current examples of software currently in the lab
are OS/2, DOS, DOS with Windows, IBM LAN Server, NetWare, NetWare
Extended Services, NetView Distribution Manager/2, IBM
Communications Manager/2, Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect for Windows, and
Business Application Performance Co.(BAPCO) Test Suite.

Q50: What determines the software, hardware mix, and network used in
     each test?

A50: Though there are specific test cases that are run during every
test, the test lab has the flexibility to configure hardware and
software uniquely for each test. There is no fixed configuration of
hardware and software that must be used. The test center sets up
the hardware and software depending on the customer's needs.

Q51: Can the Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems compatibility
reports be used in marketing the products?

A51: Absolutely. The reports are published and sent to the product owner
for just that reason. Press-release documentation is also sent.

Q52: What if the product fails the Tested and Approved compatibility
     testing? What are the options?

A52: First, if problems are encountered during testing, the vendor is
notified immediately. If the problems are serious and cannot be
resolved in an agreed-upon, reasonable amount of time, the product
will be removed from the test environment. No report will be
published. If the vendor decides within thirty days that he or she
wants to retest, the product can be retested at half price.

Q53: If a product is to be used mainly in large corporations whose
environments are a combination of mainframes, UNIX workstations,
and PCs, can it still be tested?

A53: The primary focus of Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems
is a computer environment that uses a PC as a server. The lab does
have access to mainframes and UNIX workstations through other IBM
labs, and will work with the developer to get the product tested.

Q54: Can a developer representative participate in the product testing
     for educational and problem-solving purposes?

A54: Yes. This can be a good way to help pass on knowledge that is
learned during the testing. However, it normally will not affect
     the cost.

Q55: How are problems found during Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
     Systems testing made known?

A55: Problems found with a product will be discussed with the developer.
The problems and the workarounds, if known, will also be put in the
     publicly distributed report.

Q56: If problems are found during Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN
Systems testing, can the developer have a technical person on site
     to debug the problem?

A56: The test lab encourages the presence and use of vendors' on-site
technical personnel, subject to limitations agreed upon in advance.
They can participate in the debug of problems, providing that the
effort does not significantly impact further testing of the
     product.

Q57: What is the confidentiality of the Tested and Approved test
     results?

A57: If a product passes compatibility testing, the report, after review
by the product owner, becomes public knowledge through distribution
to various media channels. If the product does not pass, the report
is confidential between the vendor and IBM.

Q58: Will the IBM integration test lab test a beta version of a product?

A58: Testing a product early in its development cycle in an integrated
environment can be a valuable test. The lab has done this type of
testing before, and will continue to do under separate written
agreements. However, no compatibility marks are issued for this
     testing.

Q59: Will the IBM integration test lab do performance testing?

A59: The IBM integration test lab is designed for testing the
compatibility and interoperability of products. There is only
limited ability to do performance testing.

Q60. Will IBM OS/2 Warp Connect be a participant in IBM's Compatibility
     testing for OS/2 Warp?

A60. Yes. ISVs can use IBM OS/2 Warp Connect for their compatibility
testing of basic OS/2 Warp function and, upon successful
completion, will receive the Ready for OS/2 Warp compatibility
     mark.

Q61. As a customer, will I be able to tell if a product displaying the
Ready for OS/2 Warp compatibility mark has tested with IBM OS/2
     Warp Connect?

A61. No. Specific versions of products are not identified under the IBM
Product Compatibility Program. Consult the specific vendor for
     information about testing.

Q62. Are the testing guidelines used for OS/2 Warp the same as those
used for IBM OS/2 Warp Connect?

A62. Yes. The compatibility testing is based on general operating-system
     functions.

Q63. Is IBM offering ISVs a discounted version of OS/2 Warp Connect for
     testing?

A63. Yes, upon request, IBM will offer ISVs a discounted version of OS/2
Warp Connect for testing purposes only.

Q64. If the testing guidelines are the same for OS/2 Warp and OS/2 Warp
Connect, what does IBM recommend if an ISV wants to test additional
     functions of OS/2 Warp Connect?

A64. It is very difficult to establish a set of guidelines for a
self-test that accommodates the entire spectrum of possibilities.
ISVs who market their product in a LAN Server environment can
request the Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server guidelines. ISVs who
market their product in a distributed environment should consider
having IBM test their product under the Tested and Approved for
     OS/2 Warp LAN Systems option.

Q65. Why should an ISV consider compatibility testing for OS/2 Warp
     Connect?

A65. The compatibility test mark displayed on a product enhances the
product's credibility in the eyes of a customer. IBM also offers
ISVs other benefits, such as marketing awareness, through the
publication of lists of compatible products, discounted advertising
     rates in major journals, etc.

          | IBM is First Member of Motion Video Consortium | mvideo
          +------------------------------------------------+

IBM announces its membership in the newly reformed OM-1 MPEG Consortium,
an industry group whose goal is to help standardize the development and
deployment of technology and applications that use compressed digital
video.

MPEG-Related Products
---------------------

The OM-1 MPEG (Motion Pictures Experts Group) Consortium will bring
together developers of MPEG chips, decoders, encoders, applications,
application tools, hardware platforms, and operating systems to
cooperate on the use and integration of their various MPEG-related
products.

IBM research has shown that integrating multiple MPEG decoders into a
given application is confusing, complicated, and time-consuming. The
OM-1 effort is expected to decrease the problems associated with MPEG
application and title development for multiple hardware platforms and
the various operating systems.

IBM Interactive Media Unit
--------------------------

Through its Interactive Media unit in Atlanta, IBM intends to leverage
its involvement in the Consortium to provide clear direction and
consulting services to its clients regarding MPEG technologies.

The Interactive Media group develops MPEG-compatible applications for
training, presentations, kiosks, sales force transformation, etc. It
also operates one of the largest video compression facilities in the
world, compressing MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video for major cable trials and
feature films, and is equipped to handle most professional video and
tape formats in both NTSC and PAL.

MPEG-2 Encoder Chip
-------------------

In addition, IBM Microelectronics Division recently reinforced IBM's
commitment to the MPEG standard by announcing the world's first
commercially available MPEG-2 encoder chip. The MPEG-2 chip will help
film makers, broadcasters, office workers, etc., be more cost-efficient
in their varying uses of digital video. The Microelectronics Division
also announced an MPEG-2 decoder chip aimed at the consumer electronics
market.

                 | Response to Computerworld Article | odocresp
                 | About OpenDoc and OLE |
                 +-----------------------------------+

(Editor's note: This item was written by the OpenDoc Product Marketing
Group at Apple Computer, Inc.)

In April, Computerworld reported that, in response to OpenDoc's growing
momentum with corporate developers, Microsoft plans to announce OLE
interoperability with OpenDoc. The article also stated that "Microsoft
is working with OpenDoc's sponsors on a relationship between OpenDoc and
OLE 2.0."

ComponentGlue
-------------

The truth is that OpenDoc and OLE already interoperate through
ComponentGlue. ComponentGlue, a part of the OpenDoc architecture,
enables OLE objects to be embedded in OpenDoc applications, and OpenDoc
objects to be embedded in OLE applications. ComponentGlue works with the
standard OLE APIs and provides complete OLE interoperability, including
OCX support.

We applaud Microsoft's acknowledgement of OpenDoc as an important
industry standard, but we're not sure what value it would be adding
beyond the OLE interoperability provided by OpenDoc. In addition,
OpenDoc supports Windows 3.5, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

More Than 70,000 OpenDoc Development Kits
-----------------------------------------

We suspect that Microsoft's statements in ComputerWorld are an attempt
to stall developer momentum for OpenDoc. Currently, over 70,000 OpenDoc
Software Development Kits have been distributed to Windows, Macintosh,
and OS/2 developers, and over 300 OpenDoc components have been
developed.

No Joint Work Ongoing
---------------------

Contrary to statements by Microsoft in the article, there is no joint
work on OLE interoperability between Microsoft and the CI Labs sponsors,
Adobe, Apple, IBM, and Novell. OLE interoperability has been developed
solely by the CI Labs sponsors to ensure that developers can participate
in the Windows environment. Microsoft has acknowledged OpenDoc's
built-in OLE interoperability by awarding its coveted Windows 95 logo to
developers supporting OLE through OpenDoc. To date, Microsoft has not
accepted invitations to join CI Labs, opting to focus on its proprietary
environment, rather than uniting with the rest of the industry.

More Information
----------------

Developers who want to start working with OpenDoc on Macintosh, Windows,
and OS/2 platforms can do the following:

* For OpenDoc for Macintosh, send e-mail to opendoc@applelink.apple.com

* OpenDoc for Windows is available from WordPerfect. Send e-mail to
  opendoc@wordperfect.com

* OpenDoc for OS/2 is available from IBM: call 1-800-342-6672.

* Send e-mail to cilabs@cil.org for more information about CI Labs.

* Obtain current documentation from FTP server cil.org

   | Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) Enhanced on OrderLink | linkesd
   +----------------------------------------------------------+

IBMLink announces enhancements to the Electronic Software Delivery (ESD)
application on OrderLink. ESD allows a user to browse descriptions of
packages such as PASSPORT, IBMLink tutorials and other industry-specific
packages, and transfer those packages to other systems.

Several Ways to Obtain Software Packages
----------------------------------------

ESD packages can be downloaded to a PC, transferred to a host system,
to an information exchange mailbox, or transferred via the Internet. ESD
now also supports selection of one or more packages for batch transfer
at a later time. (Refer to the help text for more detailed information
about deferred transfer).

ONLY THE FIRST TIME a package is downloaded to PC, a user must receive
the PCDOWN.BAT file for DOS or the PCDOWN.CMD file for OS/2. Refer to
the download instructions about how to receive these files.

Select Only New or Updated Packages
-----------------------------------

Also available with this announcement is the ability to select only new
or updated packages (WHATSNEW - What's New in ESD). This option allows
the user to specify a date to search for packages that are new or have
been updated since the last search. The search can be made specific by
application as well as by the type of view a user specifies. Packages
can be viewed by fastpath description only; description and update date;
or description, update date, and update time.

Subscribe to Applications
-------------------------

A user can now "subscribe" to particular applications by creating a
subscription list. The subscription list will be remembered across
sessions, and only those application packages and any new application
packages of the same type will be displayed on the Hit-List screen.

Tailored to Indivdidual Users' Needs
------------------------------------

These enhancements will allow users to tailor ESD package delivery to
meet individual user requirements, as well as allow consistent delivery
of packages across IBMLink.

The IBM OS/2 Developer Assistance Program (DAP) in Europe, Middle East,
and Africa (EMEA) provides a broad range of developer support and
marketing programmes to help with the design, development, and publicity
of OS/2 applications.

Membership of the EMEA OS/2 DAP is open to any developer in EMEA who is
actively developing a product or service for OS/2, be it a device
driver, a commercial product, a line-of-business application or a set of
OS/2 objects.

As a member of the OS/2 DAP, you get access to our Internet and BBS
services, from which you can browse through the vast repositories of
information about OS/2 and related products, such as C Set ++, OpenDoc,
LAN Server, DB2/2, Multimedia products, and much more. If you cannot
find what you are looking for, then simply ask your questions in the
most relevant forum, and receive replies from IBM experts or from other
members of the OS/2 DAP.

In addition, the OS/2 DAP runs a Mailing Program, which offers a great
opportunity for DAP members to promote their OS/2 products and services
to fellow OS/2 DAP members across EMEA. With over 4,000 members from
over 30 countries, the OS/2 DAP membership represents a very important
segment of the OS/2 community in EMEA.

Internet WWW Service
--------------------

The EMEA OS/2 DAP now has a home page on the Internet World Wide Web
which aims to provide extensive information relating to developing for
OS/2, much as the BBS does today. At the moment, this is only a partial
service and does not offer Question & Answer facilities, but the
intention is that the DAP service will soon be fully migrated from the
BBS to the Internet. If you need to ask questions now, you should use
the BBS. The addresses (URLs) for our Home Page are:

The EMEA DAP Home Page:
   http://www.europe.ibm.com/getdoc/psmemea/progserv/dap/
or via, the PSM EMEA Home Page:

The Bulletin Board Service
--------------------------

Until our Internet service is fully operational, our BBS is the primary
vehicle for communication between you and us, and the technical experts
in the IBM development labs. The BBS contains a wealth of information,
and allows you to download the latest tools, utilities, and fixes, and
to exchange messages with fellow OS/2 developers. You can ask your
questions and benefit from the experience of others with their answers,
comments, tips, and, in some cases, sample code to help you solve your
programming problems. You can even share your knowledge with others if
you wish.

When and if you have an application which is ready to ship, our
marketing programs will help you gain publicity and distinction for your
product. To get the most from the OS/2 DAP, please log on to the OS/2
DAP BBS regularly. The BBS is updated daily with all sorts of
information about OS/2, together with the latest news and offerings.

support program. Through Partners in Development, IBM will provide
extensive technical support from the AS/400 Software Partner Lab in
Rochester, Minnesota, and at application support centers around the
world.

Because ASsociation/400 is the primary communication vehicle for the new
Partners in Development organization, the entry membership fee for
ASsociation/400 for 1994 has been reduced to 250 USD per year.

Technical support will include hands-on courses on product strategies,
early development for unannounced products, and post-announce product
issues. It will include courses for developers seeking to exploit
emerging technologies, including:

o Client/server implementation
o Object-oriented programming
o Multimedia
o Imaging
o Fax and mobile network access
o Integrated Language Environment (ILE) assistance
o OS/400 assistance

Customized courses also will be offered at vendor sites. In addition,
Partners in Development has a toll-free phone number, 1-800-365-4426,
extension 400, through which independent software vendors can get
immediate help finding the appropriate person to assist with any AS/400
matter.

Partners in Development also will assist in vendors' marketing and
delivery programs. For example, vendors will be able to work with the
Rochester lab's fulfillment center on their system configuration
proposals for customers, and to get their offerings included in IBM
configuration proposals. In addition, they will be able to have their
offerings pre-loaded in systems shipped directly from IBM. Assistance is
also available to business partners using the IBM AS/400 Portable One, a
full-function, portable model.

AS/400 Partners in Development also includes electronic access to IBM
developers through ASsociation/400 On-Line. The interactive service
provides all schedules, new offerings, and changes via a regular
newsletter and special mailings. It also includes developers' forums,
question-and-answer access to IBM technical support staff, bulletin
boards, and computer industry trade articles.

On-line support also will be available to vendors seeking to enhance
their marketing efforts with IBM's new Portable Sales Automation System
(PSAS). PSAS is a portable configurator and a suite of automated selling
tools with leading-edge graphics that runs on PC laptop or notebook
computers.

Membership in ASsociation/400 continues to provide its members with
benefits including developer support and two free software licenses per
year for IBM software development tools and products such as ImagePlus
and Ultimedia. ASsociation/400 members also receive education discounts
and developer leases.

                | IBM Product Compatibility Program | compprog
                +-----------------------------------+

The IBM Product Compatibility Program provides an opportunity for
developers to gain increased visibility, marketability, and credibility
for their products.

Compatibility Testing Opportunity
---------------------------------

This program gives ISVs a testing opportunity to establish and
communicate the compatibility of their products with OS/2 Warp
standalone, clients, servers, and LAN systems.

Resource for Making Wise Purchasing Decisions
---------------------------------------------

This program is a resource that customers and their advisors can use to
make product purchase decisions with the confidence that a product has
been tested for compatibility with OS/2 Warp and LAN Server systems.
Consultants, resellers, integrators, OEMs, and other product decision
makers can confidently use the list of compatible products in selecting
products that meet their customers' needs. Recommending compatible
products can help expedite buying decisions and protect a customer's
investment.

Value of Tested Compatibility
-----------------------------

There are literally thousands of software products on the market today
to help solve customers' problems. The challenge is finding which
products are compatible and can be integrated into a customer's
environment.

Selecting tested compatible products gives buyers confidence in product
decisions and/or recommendations. Such confidence can speed up product
decisions and potentially lessen installation and support time.

Compatibility Program Description
---------------------------------

There are two options of product compatibility. The "Ready for..."
option shows compatibility of a software product with either OS/2 Warp
or IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp. The "Tested and Approved..." option
addresses a more sophisticated LAN systems environment to show
compatibility, interoperability, and coexistence with many LAN products.

Ready for OS/2 Warp and Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server
------------------------------------------------------

The "Ready for OS/2 Warp" and "Ready for OS/2 Warp LAN Server" programs
offer software developers a set of IBM guidelines to self-test their
products for compatibility with a particular version of either OS/2 Warp
or IBM LAN Server with OS/2 Warp.

This program, with some variations, also exists in some geographies
outside the USA and Canada. Developers outside of North America are
encouraged to contact their local IBM country representative for their
specific program benefits.

Call 1-800-IBM-4FAX (U.S.) to request documents 3241 and 3242 for a list
of compatible products under the Ready self-test program. In Canada,
call 1-800-HELP-FAX. From elsewhere, use a fax telephone to call
1-415-855-4329. Additional information can be obtained by calling
1-800-992-4777 within the U.S. and Canada.

Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems
---------------------------------------------

The "Tested and Approved for OS/2 Warp LAN Systems" program offers
hardware and software developers the opportunity to have IBM test their
product with many IBM and non-IBM products in a LAN systems
real-world-like environment. IBM publishes the results of these tests to
help customers understand the test environment plus any workarounds
discovered during the testing. Customer knowledge of test results helps
customers make more informed purchases and experience smoother
installations.

Call 1-800-IBM-4FAX (U.S.) to request document 3605 for a list of
compatible products tested by IBM in the Tested and Approved category,
with their respective test document numbers. From Canada, call
1-800-HELP-FAX. From elsewhere, use a fax telephone to call
1-415-855-4329. Additional information can be obtained by calling
1-800-992-4777 within the U.S. and Canada.

Publicity: Where to Find Compatible Product Information
-------------------------------------------------------

Upon successful completion of testing, developers are given the use of a
compatibility mark to use with their products' advertising, brochures,
and other marketing materials.

Customers are encouraged to look at products displaying the mark with
confidence that the products have been tested in an appropriate
environment. Customers can receive names and/or reports of compatible
products through the following sources:

- CompuServe IBMDESK forum
- Internet WWW: http://www.austin.ibm.com/pspinfo/compatibility.html

call 1-415-855-4329 from a fax phone, and request documents 3241,
    3242, 3605
- IBM Developer Connection CD, 1-800-633-8266
- IBM booths at major related trade shows

Compatible products also qualify for reduced advertising rates in major
magazines.
