 1. PINNACLE TECHNOLOGY: NEW AND GROWING STRONG

Pinnacle Technology is a small three year old company focused on
delivering a reliable and secure OS/2 desktop over a LAN. In the
three years of their existence, they have sold tens of thousands of
licenses for three security products: The Desktop Commander, The Desktop
 Observatory, and The Desktop Professional.

They have a strong presence in the insurance, finance and government
sectors and they are starting to gain momentum in higher education. They
just won a contract with Indiana University.

When asked why Pinnacle decided to develop their products on OS/2,
they replied without hesitation that they needed a real operating
system such as OS/2to act preemptively.

Here is part of a Pinnacle press release:

While the politicians in Washington debated the high cost of health
care, Foundation Health of California decided to do something about
it. Specifically, they set out to reduce the high cost of maintaining
their OS/2 clients by implementing centralized management of their
 desktops.

 Their requirements were simple:

  - Make OS/2 clients "end user" proof (apply restriction settings)
  - Centrally manager desktops: (create, store and deliver a desktop from
    a server)
  - Provide client flexibility: when accountants sign on to a machine they
should get their desktop; likewise, other groups using the same
machine should get their unique desktop
  - Associate centralized desktops with logon ids
  - Provide some file level security (keep the users out of config.sys).

Luckily, Foundation Health learned about Pinnacle Technology's line of
security products for OS/2: The Desktop Commander, The Desktop
Observatory, and The Desktop Professional. Each tool allows an
administrator to create a desktop profile, apply restriction settings
(e.g. "no delete"), store it centrally, and associate it with a LAN id.
Foundation Health, like the IRS and the Securities and Exchange
Commission in Washington, D.C., decided on The Desktop Observatory
because of its security. The Desktop Observatory has a unique security
daemon that "knocks down", monitors, and records unauthorized attempts
to utilize files, settings or applications.

The benefits of Pinnacle's offerings include:
  - Adaptability
  - Mobility
  - Upgradability
  - Portability

Pinnacle has earned praise (and on-going business) from customers like
Foundation Health by being absolutely committed to the successful
implementation of customers' mission critical applications. For

 2. OS/2 WARP SCREEN INTERFACE WINS PRESTIGIOUS DESIGN AWARD

The OS/2 Warp screen interface was one of many IBM products that
received the Industrie Forum Award for Design Excellence. This particular
award is very important in the design community and it is quite a
kudo for OS/2 Warp. The Industrie Forum Award winners are being
 displayed at CeBit.

 3. IBM RESPONSE TO INFOWORLD'S CRINGLEY

Here's the response from IBM to the Cringley comments that appeared in
 his column last week.

 Dear Editor:

Speculation in InfoWorld this week {Notes From The Field column,
by Robert X. Cringely that Warp represents the "end of the trail
for Intel versions of OS/2," is categorically untrue. Development
work for OS/2 on the Intel platform continues unabated. Just last
week, we announced the fullpack, or WIN-OS/2, version of OS/2
Warp with integrated and optimized Windows 3.1 application
support. This week we briefed the press on OS/2 Warp Connect, our
one-box networking solution for small business, workgroup and
 enterprise customers.

 Sincerely,

 Jo Ann Sager
 Director, Public Relations
 IBM Personal Software Products Division

7. IBM SHIPS MAINFRAME & OS/2 TO ATLANTA FOR 1996 OLYMPIC SUMMER GAMES

IBM Mid-Hudson Valley today ships one of its largest, most powerful
mainframe computers to help The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic
Games gear up for the 1996 Olympic Summer Games. The IBM System/390
ES/9000* Model 942 will be the server at the heart of a networked
computing solution used by 150,000 athletes, coaches, officials,
media and other members of the Olympic family during the 1996
Olympic Games.

The ES/9000 will run IBM's MVS/ESA* operating system. Data
requirements will be supported by IBM's DB2 database software
and its high performance, high availability RAMAC Array
subsystems.

The information system during the Games will include two
mainframes, 80 AS/400* business computing systems, RISC
System/6000* workstations and servers linked together with IBM's
networking technologies to support over 6000 IBM personal computers.

The primary client/server applications will be using IBM's
OS/2* operating system and tied together using IBM's
Local Area Networking technologies. Three of the major
applications include accreditation, results and Info'96, a
high-tech, touch-screen application that will provide event
results, news flashes, athlete biographies, historical Olympic
information and more. Primary databases for accreditation
and results reside on the ES/9000 platform.

The Results System delivers real-time information to the
worldwide broadcasters who are estimated to reach two-thirds
of the world's population. The 1996 Olympic Summer Games
events in the Southeastern U.S. are expected to be three times
as large as the 1984 Los Angeles Games and five times as large
as the 1994 Lillehammer Games.

IBM has been a key player in the Olympic Movement in
technology since 1960 in Squaw Valley. As the official
information technology sponsor of the Olympic Games, IBM is
customizing systems that will simultaneously tabulate results
for team, head-to-head, judged and timed sports, provide a
timely, accurate registration process and ensure that thousands
of reporters covering the games will have immediate access to
information.

"IBM is proud to be a sponsor of the 1996 Olympic Games

8. DATAMATION: OPENDOC COMPONENT SUITES

The February 15 issue of Datamation contains an article by IBM
coauthors Orfali and Harkey on OpenDoc component suites. The article
titled "Object Component Suites: The Whole is Greater than the Parts,"
explains how object components will be used in client/server
situations. The article explains how CORBA and OpenDoc part suites can
be used to create client/server information suites. The authors
introduce seven points that can help IS shops get ready for distributed
components. The article also covers the OpenDoc extension mechanism
and how it can be used by parts to discover what they can do for each
other.

This is the first article in the commercial press that brings together
OpenDoc and CORBA and shows how they can play together at the
client/server application level.

Bob Orfali and Dan Harkey are the coauthors of the best-selling books
"Essential Client/Server Survival Guide" (VNR, 1994) and
"Client/Server Survival Guide with OS/2" (VNR, 1994). Their
book just won the Jolt award for "best book of 1994" at the
Miller Freeman Software Development Conference.
