 1. OS/2 WARP RECEIVES FIVE AWARDS AT CEBIT (& a Codie!)

OS/2 Warp received five awards at CeBit in Hannover, Germany. PC
Professional magazine awarded OS/2 Warp, Innovation of the Year.
This award was given to recognize the creative concepts and the
revolution in technology that OS/2 Warp represents. CHIP magazine
and DOS International, two European magazines, each gave OS/2 Warp The
Operating System of the Year Award. OS/2 Warp was also given the
Software Marketing Quality Award by 1+1 Magazine. The fifth
award was for OS/2 Warp's user interface. The Industrie Forum presented
OS/2 with a Design Excellence award.

                -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

On Monday March 13th, OS/2 Warp was awarded the Codie Award by
the Software Publishers Association in the category of Best Business
Software. This is the equivalent of winning the best movie award Oscar.

As with the Oscar award, people from the industry vote. Voting for the
Codie is by members of the Software Publishing Association, an
association of worldwide commercial software developers. This is a
great form of recognition for OS/2 Warp as our peers (other software
developers in the industry) have selected OS/2 Warp as best business
software. We were up against MS Office, Lotus Approach and SmartSuite,
 Collabra Share, and Laplink.

 2. STAR DIVISION PROVIDES A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO MS OFFICE

Star Division is a German software development company that offers
an office suite with extremely rich functionality, an object-based
architecture and efficient use of system resources. The office
suite called Star Office offers more features than Microsoft
Office. However it is the clever use of shared componentry that sets this
product apart from the competition. The shared componentry allows
Star Office to use only 2.4 MB of Ram compared to other suite products
that use 4.0 MB or Ram.

The different applications included in the office product were all
developed by one team of 50 developers. This small effort ensured that
all the pieces work together and that the common elements were truly
common. For example, the menu and toolbar code in each of the
 applications is the same code.

The applications work through an application frame that pulls in
the various components as they are required in each application.
This object-based approach to build an office suite ensures
customers taht new enhancements will happen frequently and that
all applications in the suite will look and act consistent.

Star Office runs on OS/2 as well as Windows, Macintosh and Unix.
OS/2 is a premiere platform for this product. Star Office takes
advantage of the multi-tasking capabilities of OS/2, it supports
DDE, in place editing, drag and drop as well as other Workplace
Shell features. Furthermore, teh component software fits in with
 OS/2's object technology.

Star Division started in 1985, producing a word processor called
Star Writer for DOS. This year at CeBit, their 11th year at CeBit,
Star Division won the CeBit Highlight Award for their Star Writer
 product.

Star Office is currently only available in German. English support
will be added in the next release which is scheduled for June, 1995.
DVAG, a German financial firm, bought 2000 licenses of Star Writer
to run on OS/2. They are using this product as a building block
to build proprietary applications to run their business.

3. OS/2 Upload Information ( hobbes.nmsu.edu )

Wondering where/when OS/2 has received positive
reviews in the press? Lost count of the arsenal of
awards OS/2 has received? Looking for ammo to
counter mindless FUD?

I have uploaded the following to HOBBES.NMSU.EDU:

os2award.zip

(I have uploaded it to /incoming, but it may
end up elsewhere. Consult the 00index.txt file
for the exact location. Note that there is an
older version already on hobbes....this will
be replaced by this archive as soon as it
gets moved out of /incoming)

This archive contains three files:

OS2AWARD.SAM (AmiPro - For Creating Attractive Handouts)
OS2AWARD.INF (HyperText - For Searching)
OS2AWARD.TXT (ASCII Text - For Universal Access)

Essentially, the content is identical: a complete listing
(up to Feb 95) of all OS/2 Awards and Press Reviews.
These documents turn the heads of even the most
hardened skeptic, as the sheer volume of positive
reviews OS/2 & Warp has received is NO COINCIDENCE.'
The AmiPro version is slightly more comprehensive.

Here's a sample from the files:

"No operating system product to date has
offered as much out-of-the-box value as OS/2 Warp. Considering all
the added value that you will get with the BonusPak, OS/2 Warp at
$89 is perhaps the best software buy we've ever seen." (Randall
 Kennedy, InfoWorld Magazine, 14Nov94)

The three files are somewhat different, due to the
capabilities of each format. The AmiPro version
is great for printing off and handing around at the
office/school, as it is nicely formatted. The INF version
is great for doing searches on, while the TXT file
is really only included as a last resort.

I apologize in advance that there is no IBM Works
version. IBM Works can read AmiPro though.

There is no PostScript version as the file is just
too huge when converted. Sorry.

Also included are articles/reviews on PC-DOS 7,
LAN Server, VoiceType Dictation, VisualAge, etc.

Thanks to Mark Selleck at IBM for putting this
together.

** Feel free to redistribute the ZIP, as long as
it is done without modification ***

 4. GOOD NEWS ABOUT PC DOS 7

PC DOS 7 provides memory over and above what was announced. Customers
using PS/2's (ie Microchannel machines) get much more free conventional
memory with PC DOS 7 and the SCANBIOS feature than they would with
 MS-DOS.

For the DOS/Windows user this may mean not having to reboot:
 - When he wants to use 3270 mode to access the network
 - When running Windows apps
 - When he wants to add machines to a network or
 - Open more applications

Depending on the configuration, PC DOS 7 can add up to 30k more
conventional memory in a PS/2 or 72k upper memory. This greater memory
efficiency will be a very strong argument in convincing
a customer to demand PC DOS 7 as their standard for
existing and preloaded systems when installing DOS/Windows.

This memory boost is limited to PS/2 that are 386 and faster. The
additional memory will be gained by incorporating the SCANBIOS program
that is now run manually to detect unused memory into the RAMBOOST
program. Since the RAMBOOST program is run automatically, the
SCANBIOS program will also run automatically.

 5. ISVs SHOW SUPPORT FOR OS/2 FOR THE POWERPC AT CEBIT

IBM is showing the latest beta of OS/2 for the PowerPC(a) at
CeBIT here this week, with demonstrations of pre-release code
running productivity applications, games and development tools.

Once again, ISVs have demonstrated that their 32-bit OS/2
applications are a simple recompile away from running on OS/2 for
the PowerPC. The following ISVs are demonstrating their
applications in the Apple/IBM/Motorola alliance pavilion at CeBIT,
and will be showing how easy it is to support multiple hardware
platforms with a single OS/2 32-bit API source set:

       - Computer Associates is demonstrating CA-SuperProject, a
complete set of project management and presentation tools designed
for widespread corporate use. It is the leader in innovative and
   realistic project management

       - Metaware is demonstrating its High C/C++ Software
Development Tools for PowerPC microprocessors, including Compiler,
   Linker and Assembler

       - Pinnacle Technology, Inc. is showing The Desktop
Observatory, a desktop management and security system for the OS/2
Workplace Shell, and Kidproof/2, a version of The Desktop
Observatory for standalone business and home use

       - Softpro is demonstrating Touch-GUI 2.11 for OS/2, a 32-bit
C++ GUI class library for OS/2 and LIF (TM) - Legal Insurance
Frameworks, 400 C++/SOM classes for legal insurance companies

       - Stardock Systems is demonstrating Entrepreneur for PowerPC
microprocessors, a multimedia business strategy game for OS/2 Warp

       - Sundial Systems is showing Relish, the time management
application featuring drag-drop convenience, desktop objects for
common and customable views, and maximum flexibility

IBM is also showing OS/2 for the PowerPC on several pedestals
in its booth, including demonstrations of: the OS/2 Warp interface
(Workplace Shell); the One-Up Smart Tool; Wipeout, the
fully-integrated screen saver from BocaSoft; and portions of the
OS/2 Warp BonusPak. In addition, IBM is demonstrating OpenGL, an
industry standard 3-D API which is currently in beta test on OS/2
for the PowerPC. OpenGL provides an entry level of 3-D
functionality which was previously only available on expensive
   workstations.
