                       FEATURED AT SEPTEMBER 10TH MEETING

The next meeting of the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group will be held Wednesday

MAIN MEETING (7:30 - 9:00)

"OS/2 in the Workplace"

The featured speaker for the September 10th meeting will be Mr. Bruce
Albritton of the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Bruce is an
Information Center Supervisor with the District. In that role he is
responsible for providing support for users of personal computers, SAS and
most recently becoming the LAN administrator for the new Application Development

installing products such as ADSM and DB2/2, and providing support
to developers using OS/2 workstations. Effective August 11, 1997, the
District moved its software development environment from the traditional
mainframe environment to the Application Development LAN and migrated from
the mainframe development Cross System Product to the PC based Visual Age
Generator (OS/2). Bruce has been with the District for over 10 years and was
previously a Senior Programmer/Analyst. He is better known to most of us as our

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Good News! Attendance at our August Meeting was much improved. My thanks
to all of you that made the effort to attend. It demonstrated that our
organization is still active and the members are still interested in OS/2.

Bad News/Good News! At the August Meeting a motion was made and seconded to
disband the Tampa Bay OS/2 User's Group. This was based on the dismal
attendance at several previous meeting's, IBM's change in direction regarding
OS/2 and the perception that our members were no longer interested in having
a user's group. After much discussion, some of it quite passionate, and
input from many of the members present and our IBM representative, a vote was
taken. The vote was resoundingly in favor of continuing with the users'
group.

It should be noted that if attendance falls off again, or it appears that our
members are not interested in supporting the users' group, another vote can
be called for at any time. The next time, it might go the other way. If you
want our group to continue what can you do?

1. Attend the meetings.
2. Provide input to Tim Bryce (TimB1557@aol.com) for the newsletter.
3. Promote OS/2.
4. Try to bring in new members.
5. Look for speakers for our meetings (call or write Bob Gonnella
    at 813/381-2000 X 3353 or rnga@eci-esyst.com).
6. Look for OS/2 software, shareware, utilities, etc. and bring the
    information to our meetings.
7. Look for businesses that use OS/2, You might be surprised who does!
8. Get involved!

During the week of August 11-15, I attended SHARE, the IBM User's Group meeting
in Atlanta, Georgia. I attended several OS/2 based sessions and
talked to IBM representatives and other SHARE attendees about the future of
OS/2. My conclusion: although IBM has shifted direction to corporate
support, OS/2 is not going away. IBM is putting resources into it and
expanding its use in new products such Bluebird. Many businesses and a lot
of SOHO and home users have decided not to migrate to a new version of
another operating system and are continuing to run Windows 3.1 and DOS
programs. What better platform to run them on than OS/2. As JAVA is
improved, and applications and applets become available there is even more
reason to stay with OS/2.

An article in the August issue of Government Computer News quoting a
Dataquest Study states that OS/2 Warp Server licenses will increase at nearly
twice the rate of Novell IntranetWare and all UNIX platforms through 2000.

OS/2 Warp FM Infoflash 33 contains information on a study done comparing OS/2
Warp Server Performance with NT. The study concluded that OS/2 was better than
NT 4.0 on the uni-processor and better-to-equivalent on the multi-processor
version when running NetBench 4.01 from Windows 95 clients. See
http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/performance/wslcomp.htm

It's looking better! See you at the September 10th Meeting.

- John Tardy, CCP

MINUTES OF THE MONTHLY MEETING - August 6, 1997

The Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group met on Wednesday, August 6, 1997 at IBM's
LakePointe office building in Tampa. There were approximately 15 members in
attendance.

Tim Bryce, TBOUG's founder, made a motion to dissolve TBOUG due to the
following:

- Membership is down
- Attendance is down
- IBM's support of the group is fading (an example is that IBM is no longer
  a corporate member)

Arnold Behre seconded the motion.

Discussion ensued. IBM's Dan Farrel explained their position with regard
to OS/2 and TBOUG. His main points were that IBM is no longer targeting
OS/2 at home users and that IBM's presence at the Tampa office is not what
it once was. He also mentioned that TBOUG is of, by, and for the members
and that we should be more self-reliant (i.e., less involvement from IBM).

The vote was 2 for dissolution and the rest were against. President
John Tardy said he would have a board meeting to discuss the issue further.

He then motioned to adjourn the meeting. Bob Gonnella seconded and the motion
passed.

Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Albritton, TBOUG Secretary
